What a crazy world we live in.

I belong to a yahoo group for South Australian Home Schoolers.

One of the members bought to our attention the two bills that are about to be passed in Australia will make it illegal for midwives to attend home births and will face fines up to $30000.

Now just before I go on, I have never had a home birth and would probably never have one. All my labours have been long and hard. I don't dilate well and have needed intervention nearly every time.

That said though I do believe a women should have a choice in which setting she gives birth to her child. If a women wants to give birth at home, she should be allowed to.

This is taking away true freedom. If we can give a women the "freedom" to abort her baby why can't she have the freedom to choose where to give birth.

I am signing The petition against this and urge all other Australians to do so too.

Wow, that's scary. I can't believe it. Like you,I have needed intervention to many times to consider a homebirth myself, Although I would love to have one :)
But every mother should have the right to have her baby wherever she feels safest.

Just another example of government wanting to control all aspects of our lives. It's a shame that in Australia of all places, government can't keep from taking over where and how women give birth. I'm sure they have a "good reason" for intruding.

If a woman wants to give birth at home she should have that right. She should also have the right to be able to choose a midwife to help assist in the home birth without the fear of a hefty fine.
I would imagine that more women give birth in a hospital as opposed to home. So what is the big deal? Do they think it's taking away business/money from the hospital and doctors?
I agree with you, if a woman can choose to abort her baby, she should be able to choose where she gives birth.
We do live in a crazy world!

Hi Therese,
I have signed the petition, not for my sake - my days of child-bearing are over, but for my daughter and her daughter's sakes.

I believe that all Australian women should have the choice of how they want to have their children.

My births were not easy, and I was classed as high risk, especially with my son, as I had a DVT (blood clot) in my leg, and was on anti-clotting medication for the last trimester of my pregnancy, so this was never an issue for me. My daughter was 13 days overdue, and I was also classed as high risk with her, due to asthma.

However, people need to be able to make the decision for themselves. At last glance, I thought that this country was a democracy???
Blessings,
Jillian

i had thought about having brooke at home back in the day, but during labor, i had a hard time as her shoulders were very big. (she is five foot 10 and has big shoulders even to this day) iam glad i tell you that i had her in a hospital. but i agree, i think women ought to have the option to have their baby at home. so long as the midwife knows when the baby can get into a crisis and needs medical attention so that she calls 911 immediately. nowadays, they make hospitals very home like. especially here in alberta.
but, hospitals are not for everyone!

yes, therese, i too believe women should be able to have that same choice. i know that i'll never be having a homebirth b/c of the same reasons you stated.

Our sons Tom and Christopher and our daughter Amelia are type one diabetics. We pray everyday for a cure. We do not want one by illicit means though so don't support any organisation that contributes to Embryonic Stem Cell Research.
