I put this you tube video on my blog back in 2007. It is one of my favourite ones. I just watched it and decided to post again for those that haven't seen it.

World Diabetes Day.

Today is world awareness diabetes day.

Having two boys with type one diabetes, has had a huge impact on our lives. My day is full of blood sugar  tests, pump changes and alarms.

Type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease. This simply means that the bodies own immune system attacks the body and kills of cells. In type one diabetes, the immune system attacks the pancreas and kills of the insulin producing islets.

At this stage there is no known cure for type one diabetes. A person with it has to inject insulin every day. They are dependent on insulin to live. Even though they don't have any cure, there are advances been made to finding better ways to treat and live with diabetes.

Blood glucose monitoring is possible. We check the boys blood sugar level around 8-10 times a day. We can give insulin as needed through the pump. We can check if the boys have ketones in their blood. When Tom was diagnosed and in intensive care, they sent someone from the lab to collect blood to see what level ketones were at. It took time for them to tell us what level the ketones were. Now I put  a strip in the blood meter and know within 10 seconds if either of my boys have ketones.

There is also continuous blood glucose monitoring and an artificial pancreas. We don't have these yet but they have changed the whole lifestyle of people living with type one diabetes.





These advances are great but still we pray for a cure for both our boys and all the other children (and adults) that suffer from type one diabetes. One of my hopes is to say one day, my boys use to have type one diabetes but  now they have been cured. I will not support any organisation or group though that puts funds into embryonic stem cell research. This is immoral and has not shown any promise at all. I really don't believe we can get a cure with ESC. Adult stem cells have shown much more promise anyway.

Hello.

Tonight I am making fruit  scrolls. I though while I was waiting for them to bake in the oven, I would post here since I haven't posted for a while.

Joseph has had his glasses for nearly 2 weeks now and he wears them everyday. He occasionally takes them off and puts them on the ground but will usually put them back on when we ask him too. His leg muscles are tightening up again probably because he has had a growth spurt so we have some more physio sessions for him this month and Steve and I are spending a bit of time getting him to kick balls with his left leg. I also take him to the foreshore most mornings. While we are there, I get him to walk across this low stepping bridge with his left leg first and to climb the stairs to the slippery dip with left leg first too. 

Earlier this week, we had solar panels put on our roof. We had 21 panels put up and we are hoping this will be enough that we don't pay for electricity again or that we pay very little for it. With 9 people living in our house, our electricity bill is huge so this seemed like a really good investment for us. 

Also this week, I watched this youtube video for the first time. I loved it and have watched it several times since.

Our weekend.

I have been feeling a bit off this weekend. I woke up yesterday with a headache and today I woke up with a sore throat. I have taken it easy today especially and think I should be okay for this weeks school.

Yesterday was pretty nice. We took the children down to the foreshore for a play. They like going to the playground there.

Praying together.

I have been thinking about writing about praying as a couple for a while now.

Last night I read a post by Sue from Sue Elvis Writes, about spending time together and praying together.

It was the motivation I needed to get me writing about it too.

After 20 years of marriage, I would have to say that praying with Steve is the thing that really cements our marriage together. There have been many times that the need for prayer has been stronger than other times and that we have looked to God to get us through.

In our house, we pray with the children every night. On average, we would probably pray together twice a week. It really should be more but I think we don't see it as a real need for our marriage. A part of the reason we neglect it is we just feel so comfortable with each other and prayer tends to be a thing I put as a high priority when I face problems. I am trying to change this and see prayer as a thing to do in the good times and bad times. It is something that is so esential for all aspects of our lives but especially our marriage.

When Steve and I pray, we will usually pray something like the rosary, read from the bible or just have some quiet music in the background, a candle lit and sit together in the quiet. I think the quiet music and candle light is my favourite way to pray.



Taize music is one of our favourite musics to put on. It makes the atmosphere and helps me to focus on God. We also have some Gregorian chant and some music by The Priests.

I have so many things to blog about at the moment but time seems to be short. I decided to do this quick post tonight and will be back soon hopefully to give you all an update on all that is happening in our lives.

Test Strips for Rwanda

I would be so lost if I couldn't test Tom and Christopher's bsl every day. The children in Rwanda do not have this luxury. They only test once a week. That would just frighten me a lot. Please share this video. Roche will donate a strip for every view up to 1000 views.

Tonight I was taking the girls to mass and Brigette recorded this on the way. Water was all over the road. I haven't ever seen it so flooded here.

Tasty Tuesday: Home made mayonnaise.

I think one of the delights of summer is having salad with mayonnaise. I love mayonnaise on salad rolls, chicken schnitzels and just to make some lettuce more appetizing.

I decided this weekend to try and make some myself. I looked for a recipe on the net and found this one.

I got all my ingredients out and realised we had no vegetable oil. I decided to use all olive oil. What a big mistake. The mayonnaise was awful. It had such a strong oil taste that I was gagging as I was eating it.

I then went surfing the net and found this little video:



I decided that I couldn't make myself or the children eat it so the chickens had a big feed of the olive oil mayonnaise.
I bought some vegetable oil last night. I haven't tried the recipe yet but I think I will try it tomorrow and see what it tastes like. Maybe Tom and Amelia will have a lesson on emulsifying.

An inspirational guy.

My fil sent us a video about this guy and I did a search on youtube for him.

He has no arms or legs but will not let that get in the way of having a great life. We can always focus on what we don't have when really the best way to be happy is to focus on what we do have.
