I get a lot of emails and notes on here about Trixie Belden so I have decided to write about her.
I think I was about 12 when my mother bought my sister and I the first two books in the Trixie Belden series.
At first I wasn't too impressed and thought oh boy another attempt from mum to get me to like reading. I really didn't like it much then and didn't really seek out stories to read. There were other much more interesting things to do then as a pre teen.
My mother bought these books while we were on holidays. My younger sister who had always enjoyed reading soon got into the book and was pretty boring company so I decided to pick up the book and read it. There wasn't much else to do in the car when we were driving to different tourists spots. Pretty quickly Trixie and Honey became some of the greatest friends I had ever had. I really enjoyed reading along and solving the mystery along side them.
When we first started reading the books, there were about 28 in the series. I remember when the next 4 were released and couldn't wait to read them. Now the series goes up to number 39. I know I have read at least the first 32 in the series and may have read 33 and 34 but I am not certain. I recognise the titles but cannot remember the story line.
I am going to start reading number 1 and 2 to Tom and Amelia next term. I was able to find the new series of hard cover books on Booktopia and have ordered them. I am hoping to buy the whole series again over time.
Did you have a favourite book growing up or enjoy any series?

I loved the Ramona Quimby books. In fact I just dug them up from my parents' house and am bringing them home with me. I always felt like I totally understood her, and imagined her living in my neighborhood. Also adored the Little House books and finally just got my own set. I was hooked on the Babysitters Club in middle school, but I don't see those as anything worth sharing with my kids.
My mom is a huge Trixie Belden fan, she must have almost all of the books. I remember her buying them up at garage sales when I was little. I think she always hoped my sister and I would get into them, but we never did. :(
In a way I think that may happen with our children too. Madeline and Brigette don't seem to interested in the books we have bought home from mums. Maybe they will like the new ones though.
I loved Nancy Drew, the original stories not how they have rewritten them now! I think we had them all over atime.
I read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Little House book series. By the time I was in 5th grade I was reading whatever lie about in the house (watch out parents!) and read Thorn Birds (oy! too steamy for me). I moved on to Jane Austin and company and fully into Dostoyevsky (sp) in high school.
I've never heard of these books you mention here and wonder if they can be found in the States.
What a great post! My two favorite books were the Pippy Longstocking series and Laura Inglalls Wilder or Little House on the Prairie series. I even bought several years ago a Pippy Longstocking video that I get a kick out of reading. It has voice overs for English which make it even more hilarious to watch.
Oh, what a great topic! I loved them all - LIttle House, the EB White books, the Beverly Cleary books, et... but my sister and I had a Trixie Beldon vs. Nancy Drew "war". Though I didn't particularly dislike Trixie, I felt a moral obligation to stick up for Nancy, whom my sister did not like. &;O) My 10 y.o. is reading the Nancy Drews now and loving them~! (We like the '30s versions, too)
Hi Therese,
I had The Secret Seven, Famous Five and Nancy Drew books when I was growing up, and I absolutely loved books for they were my constant companion during my childhood years, as I was constantly in hospital.
I hadn't heard of Trixie Belden until just recently, but I'm wondering what age range they would be suitable for, as my daughter devours books?
She loves Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables series, Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew, Famous Five and Secret Seven, although she is now reading more biographies.
Blessings,
Jillian

Jillian,
I think the book would be suitable for a pre teen. I think my 12 year old daughter would have no problem reading them herself but I am going to read them to Tom and Amelia (aged 9 and 8). Tom would probably be able to read them himself but I think he would probably see them as a bit of a girly book and not really desire to read them himself. They like me reading to them though and will read just about anything with me.
Oh, Trixie! I loved her but I wasn't too keen on Honey. And neither could come close to Anne of Green Gables, Diana and Gilbert. Something about the physical and moral beauty in Montgomery's writing went straight into my soul. I grew up with most of the others mentioned here too.
My eldest is five years old, but I think I might be able to start reading some of my old favourites to her. What a joy!
lol Marilyn.
I loved both of them. I don't think there was a character I didn't like much.
I had a friend in high school that couldn't stand Diana. I was surprised because she just seemed so perfect. My friend ended up saying to me, only loan me books that Diana isn't in. There were quite a few that she was off doing something else or my friend would not have read many at all.
My favourite book as a child was 'The Enchanted Wood' by Enid Blyton.
I loved the enchanted woods and the folk of the faraway tree was another classic.
I love Trixie Belden too. I have the first 17 books - the originals. Still looking to add to my collection. I also loved reading the Cherry Ames books. My mom had them as a teenager and passed them on to me. They are wonderful but hard to find.
I have all of my Trixie Belden's still, a couple of boxes of them:) My kids are big fans, yes and Hardy boys, Nancy Drew The Faraway Tree series etc.
I love Trixie!!!!
i loved trixie belden, myself...and nancy drew too.
thanks for reminding me of her.
her and honey were great friends of mine in the 4th grade.
My grandma was cleaning out my mom's old room and gave me those books when I was around 10 or so. I re-read them all the time (and I NEVER did that with any other books!) I wish I had held on to them but they were lost in time. Random House re-published them recently so I got Trina and Weazy in to them! Weazy (8) is loving the series!
I enjoyed Trixie Belden too. But I really loved James Herriot and still have the 3 omnibus collection!
Louise,
Is that the series that was on TV about the country vet? We loved watching that series and I didn't realize it was a book.
Okay, I'm muttering this behind my hand, and if anyone mentions it I'm going to deny its authorship...
I started with Enid Blyton...Secret Seven, Famous Five, Adventurous Four, the Mallory Towers books - pretty much everything.
From Edid I moved on to Trixie, and you know even last week on the 1st July if you'd peeked into my bedroom when I woke you'd have seen me whispering (so that nobody heard me) "Rabbits" just like Trixie taught me in book 7 or 8, and just like I've surreptitiously done every 1st of the month for the 30 years since.
When I ran out of Trixie I started on Nancy Drew. Loved those too.
I also read all the Green Gables and all the Billabong series somewhere...
It must have been about here that I found real literature rather than series books - it happened about this time, anyhow.
I haven't stopped reading since!!
It's hardly strange that when I found the literature intensive Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling I decided it was perfect for me!!
I'd better go - people are wondering why I'm whispering!!
Jeanne,
I remember the story behind rabbit rabbit on the first of the month. I remember trying to do it each month too but always forgetting when I woke up.
I think it was in book 14 that Trixie did the rabbit rabbit.
