Stem Cells again.

I mentioned in my post about stem cells that I was finding it difficult to find information on who supports embryonic stem cell research. Today I received an email from the American Life League answering my question about who fund this research so wanted to pass the information on.

In 2005 ALL researched organisations that supported:

  • fetal tissue, cell or organ use when that tissue is acquired from direct abortion done at any time during nine months of pregnancy
  • Human embryo research and/or experimentation
  • Human embryonic stem cell research and/or experimentation
  • Human cloning

here is the link to their research

from that link:

American Diabetes Association:

"The American Diabetes Association applauds this morning's statement by Majority Leader Frist announcing his support of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. By easing restrictions and supporting research that uses embryonic stem cells - while also implementing strong ethical guidelines - this legislation provides hope to the more than 18 million Americans living with diabetes." (emphasis added)

Copy of News Release issued July 29, 2005 mailed along with cover letter on December 22, 2006.

The American Diabetes Association also issued a press release on April 13, 2007, "American Diabetes Association lauds Senate for passage of Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act." The release applauded the Senate's decision to pass S. 5 "which will accelerate stem cell research by easing existing funding restrictions and supporting research that uses embryonic stem cells, while maintaining strict ethical guidelines."

See comments under ACSH and CAMR.

For JDRF:

The JDFR position paper on stem cell research can be viewed online and reads, in part:

"Embryonic stem cells hold tremendous promise for the treatment of life-threatening and debilitating diseases such as type 1 diabetes."

There are also a number of links to press releases, newsletter articles and legislative update memos which reiterate JDRF's support for human embryonic stem cell research.

JDRF is a member of both ACSH and CAMR.

A friend posted this article to me:

Dr. Robert Goldstein on stem cell research

I wonder if all the facts Dr. Goldstein puts forward about Embryonic stem cell research is true.

Wow!

I would venture to say that most of Dr. Goldstein's commentary is pure lie.

The bank I used to work at always raised funds for JDRF. They would get upset because I refused to participate. After all, why WOULDN'T a type I diabetic want to be cured???

At a kick-off BBQ that they had before the fundraising event one year, they had a big wig from the local JDRF office there to answer questions. So, I asked her about embryonic stem cells. She had the gall to tell me that they have developed a way to "extract the stem cells without actually killing the embryo."

I know that she was just an office person and not an actual scientist, so she was just giving me information from their list of talking points. I told her that was very interesting news to me. I wonder why we've never heard that they developed a way to do this in the news....

As far as the being on a pump and testing sugars 8 times a day (or more for me.) Who cares? Yes, it's an extra step in daily care. However, this disease is manageable.

With all of the technology developed in the past 20 years or so, we diabetics are living much longer and healthier lives. I would like to say thank you to all of those scientists/companies who have developed the means for us to be able to get tight control and help stave off complications.

OK, Therese, my slight rant is complete. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful information! You've managed to find one of my "hot" buttons. {{{grin}}}

Hey Regan,

I am amazed at the length people will go to to support Embryonic stem cells. I know what you mean about it being manageable. In the third world countries many children die from type one and many loose limbs. They don't have the luxury of testing their sugars and having insulin injections.

Well if that ain't an oxymoron....
When are they going to promote adult stem cell research, which has been proven to be far more efficacious than embryonic?

I don't know if you saw it or not Shirley but I did find that Children with diabetes is supporting Adult stem cell research. They also state on their site that they don't put any money into embryonic stem cell research. This is one charity I will support for that reason.

Please pray for a cure for Type One Diabetes
Our sons Tom and Christopher and our daughter Amelia are type one diabetics. We pray everyday for a cure. We do not want one by illicit means though so don't support any organisation that contributes to Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Click on the photo of Tom and Christopher to read about why I am against using Embryonic Stem cells for a cure.
