The Golden Compass.

I am sure many of you have heard about this book by Philip Pullman. I haven't read them or seen the movie but I have heard enough to know that it isn't something I want my children to see.

We got a note from one of our children's teachers telling us that they were going to be watching some movie's over the next few weeks and one of the movies on the list was the Golden Compass. I felt sick when I read the note. We know that the movie is anti Christian and presents the church in a bad light. Why the heck would anyone want to show this movie to a group of children?

We have given permission for our child to watch all the movies except The Golden Compass and written a letter explaining what is wrong with the movie to the teacher and why we won't let our child watch it.

I find it a bit frightening that secularism is so ingrained into our society that someone doesn't think it is wrong to show a movie like this in a Catholic School.

If anyone is interested in reading a bit more about the movie and why it shouldn't be promoted and watched by young children Catholic Answer's has a great article on it.

if i had younger children, there wouldn't be a chance that they'd read that book, or see the movie. good for you for explaining to the teacher your reasons why.

Therese, the fact that the school made it known to the parents they were going to show this movie, indicates they knew it was controversial.

Oh my goodness! I can't believe they'd show this at your Catholic school! Maybe the powers-that-be there will learn from your letter and be more cautious in the future?

Happy belated birthday to Brigette, btw!

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ,

What a little battle you have going on. Thank you for making a stand.

BTW. I have a prayer request listed on my blog. Your prayers are greatly appreciated.

Thank you Theres!

Esther,

The school's are not allowed to show any movies that aren't rated G without the parents permission.

But I did say to Steve, the movie has received enough press to know that it is controversial.

Nothing surprises me!

Good for you for standing up! Hopefully other parents did the same. I'll bet you're not the only one. Maybe that'll make them pick another movie ::shoulder shrug::

hi Therese

It makes you wonder if it is a Catholic school

Here in Canberra, they are advertising Catholic education in one ad aimed at parents of new kindergarteners as some kind of private alternative to the public systems when they should state it is primarily for Catholic kids to get a Catholic education.

Hi Karnak,

One of the things I have found with living in the country is many families are not sending their children to a Catholic school for a Catholic education but for a private education.

Yes, it does make you wonder if it's a Catholic school. It tells you something about THEIR judgement AND what they KNOW about the faith.

What other errors are they teaching the children???

Hi Therese,

Regardless of the movie (although this one is definitely inappropriate for a Catholic school) there are so many better things that children can be doing during the school day that doesn't involve movie watching.

What about an hour long nature walk--for fun? Or some type of group game? Or even just "free play"? Novel concept.

I suppose it's just easier to put on a movie. So sad.

God Bless,
Jane
