An update on Tom

As I posted earlier this week I took Tom to Adelaide on Thursday night to see his Endocrinologist and a Diabetes Educator. We did this because we have been on a waiting list for him to get an insulin pump.

Tom was diagnosed when he was 14 months old. You can read about it here.

I first heard about pump therapy about 6 months after Tom was diagnosed. It wasn't an option for us to pursue though because at that stage it cost $300.00 a month for the extras because it hadn't been approved for Govt assistance.

Back in May/June this year I spoke with a Diabetes Educator. He is an insulin dependant diabetic too and he was on a pump. He gave us some pump info and I decided to ring the Endocrine unit in Adelaide and make enquiries about it. They told me that his doctor would need to approve pump therapy for him and then he would go onto a waiting list. We spoke with Tom's Doctor a couple of days later and she agreed that it would be best for Tom to get the pump therapy. We went on the waiting list and finally after 3 months of waiting our date has been set. We still have to wait till November for Tom to get the pump but we have chosen our pump and had our fist training session on how they work and how to programme them.

Tom will get his pump in November and he, I and Christopher will have to stay in Adelaide for a week so that we can get help easily if there are any problems. Steve will be staying here and running the house and looking after our other 5 children. I think this will be the first time in our marriage that we will not see each other for such a long time so prayers for both of us while we deal with issues apart from each other would be appreciated.

Yes, separations are horrible. Nick has to go away for about 8 weeks every year (but not usually more than two weeks at a time) and I Do Not Like It!

Even worse when it's due to the health of a child. Will pray that all goes well and everyone copes okay.

Please pray for a cure for Type One Diabetes

Please pray for a cure for Type One Diabetes
Our sons Tom and Christopher and our daughter Amelia are type one diabetics. We pray everyday for a cure. We do not want one by illicit means though so don't support any organisation that contributes to Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Click on the photo of Tom and Christopher to read about why I am against using Embryonic Stem cells for a cure.
