Charlie and the Chocolate factory

Tonight the children and I watched the 2005 version of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. It is the first time I have seen it but the children have all seen it before.

Although many people I have spoken with about this movie didn't like it, I actually enjoyed it. I found the Oompa-Loompas very entertaining and actually prefered Johnny Depp as Willy to Gene Wilder.

A great family movie.

We prefer the Johnny Depp version too. I finally liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! LOL! Gene Wilder used to scare me.
You're doing a great job at home with the younger ones, Therese. This is a special time for them too, while the older kids enjoy WYD week.

lol pfp, I was scared of Gene Wilder too when I was younger. He was just so creepy. I wonder if the people that don't like Johnny Depp are people that have read the book. Maybe I should try reading it.

i guess i'm in the minority here - usually am - I'm the other way around. I felt the Depp portrayal wasnt' as true to character. I loved Wilder's subtle sarcasm as well.

I just really don't like it when they make re-makes - they tend to modernize a lot which spoils the story. not referring to this movie but just in general.

See, i told i'm in the minority

I LOVE this version, too. I still like the Gene Wilder version.

I try to keep them separate in my head. Sort of like keeping the Lord of the Rings books separate from the movies. They all have their own good qualities.

I loved the Depp version, but I prefer the Wilder version.
I love Johnny Depp. He's a great actor and always seems to really get into character. His version of Willie Wonka was a bit creepy, but what can you expect from a Tim Burton film?
I'd watch either version any day. The updated Oompa Loompa guy was pretty good. Better than the painted guys in the old movie.
