Swine Flu Vaccine

I have read so many different conflicting reports about pregnancy and the swine flu vaccine. I am finding the more I research it, the more confused I am becoming.

It seems to me that there is a lot of stories out there that are naturally fear mongering both for and against the vaccine. What are your thoughts about it?

Editing to add this link that I got from DCF that seems finally to be balanced and without fear mongering. Scroll down to October 19th.

I think I am going to get it.

I feel exactly the way you do about this and the newsmongering. It is all very confusing. We were set to get it (the shots because Andy and Drew can't have the mist), but now H1N1 is so rampant in the city. I actually think Andy has it right now-he's been sick since Friday. Now, we're not getting it even though we are a target group with the baby, but there are no shots available, and we'll get it if we don't have it already by the time the shots are here. I will pray for you Therese to be able to make a decision.

Therese,
I work for a hospital. We've seen several deaths....mostly children and one pregnant woman. If I were you, I'd get the vaccine. DO NOT get the nasal inhaler! Get the regular injection.
Yes, the media has gone overboard as a scare tactic, however, I'm now starting to see things that are very scary. I get daily updates from CIDRAP (http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/) you can go there and sign up for email updates. It's a pretty good source of information.
Blessings to you and yours!!!
Nancy

Right now here in the states it's strongly recommended only for children 0-4 years old, pregnant mothers, 50+, and persons who are sickly.

My cousins children have already had it, and my neighbors. We haven't had the shot yet...not even sure it's available here yet. I probably won't get it. I never do get a flu shot, and I'm not convinced this one is any worse than the others, just spreading more.

We are taking precautions - stopped going to homeschool P.E. and pick a different time for mass when there are less or no children(germ poolers).

H1N1 is running through our city--and especially through our parish--like wildfire. More than half of my friends and their families have had it. All survived the three-day ordeal and came out okay. Everyone whose H1N1 test was positive describes different symptoms. Only one family had two members with pneumonia as a secondary infection but that was taken care of with antibiotics. Some of the women who had it are pregnant, some are not.

I am pregnant and am not getting the shot. I never get a flu shot. We may have already had it and just don't realize it; we've had a couple of bugs over the last 1/2 year that sound a lot like it. I'm not worried about it. To each their own!

There are always risks in life and we just have to do our best to weigh them up. That's what you're doing Therese, so be at peace about whichever decision you make. I haven't read enough about it to really have a opinion.

I haven't had Linus vaccinated, but we haven't heard much about it here.

Right now where I live they are so behind in getting it and when they do it will only be for pregnant women and infant to 4 yr olds and also for elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Personally for myself, if I was pregnant or had a newborn.. I'd get the shot for myself and baby.. it has gotten very serious, our schools have closed twice due to so many sick kids and teachers:(

Thanks for all your input. I just went to the library and there was a clinic set up there giving out the H1N1 shot so I decided to do it.

Hi Therese,
We all had the swine flu vaccine, too. I am immunocompromised and our children both suffer with asthma.

Have a wonderful week.
Blessings,

I was on the fence about getting the vaccine at first as well. But my doctor (OB/GYN) seemed pretty adamant that I get it. So I got mine at my appointment last Thursday. I guess I just want to protect myself and my baby. I was also pleased that the vaccine my dr's office recieved contained only trace amounts of the preservative thimerosal (sp?). My mom is allergic to this, I am not, but it can cause severe reactions.

I'm trying to find a clinic that fits our busy schedule to get my 4 year old in to get a vaccine as well. I think we're going to wait and go through his pediatrician's office. They won't get any of the vaccine in for a couple of weeks.

I've been praying for you and a young expectant lady at my husbands office especially because of the swine flu!

That is one nasty complication you don't need to have.

Disclaimer: my husband works for Novartis.

Three of the five members of our family are Allergic to egg so we can't get the flu shot (our arms get hard lumps at the area of injection). Yes, there is a lot of fear being sold to the public. However, it can be lethal. I live in a big city so pir family gets a lot more exposure to all types of bad stuff so we usually choose to get vaccinated if we can. If you choose not to get the shot there is still the option of Tamiflu which will usually make the symptoms a lot less severe. Novartis is coming out with a subculture vaccine that should work for egg allergy sufferers.

I think that there are people who should get the vaccine - pregnant women and those caring for infants are in that group (especially if one lives in a metropolitan area).

Here's where I swallow my words. My doctor just called and wants me to get the H1N1 vaccine so I'm on my way in tomorrow morning. I didn't feel too strongly about it, told him I wasn't going to ask for it but if he strongly recommended it, I would get it. He strongly recommended it (because I'm pregnant), which is rare for him.

I'll be joining the vaccinated ranks!

Good call to follow the advise of your doctor Aubrey. Yesterday I took the boys for blood tests since they are having a checkup next week. The doctor that filled in the forms said that when the vaccine is available for them (at the moment they are still testing it for under 10 year olds here) to get it. I think I will take all the children to have it then.
