Energy saving bulbs, the ones with the coil thingy and power strips.
Do you find that they burn out quicker than conventional bulbs? Mine do for some reason. Do you use the dryer or dishwasher a lot? There is a site called energy hog that tells you how to conserve on electricity.http://www.energyhog.org/
dishwasher is used once a day and we only use the dryer when it is raining. Most Australian's hang their washing on the line.
We have the coil lights. I don't think they burn out quicker. I cannot remember how long we have had them. They say on the packet that they last three times longer and save more money.
Thanks for the link Esther.
yup. lots. where do i start? lol.
I don't know if this is true in Australia, but our electric company charges less for wattage used at night. I guess there is less demand then? So, run laundry or the dishwasher in the evening instead of the day time and it might save a little?
Jane
Marilena,
Start with the biggest money saver lol.
I will try the dishwasher and washing machine at night Jane although as far as I know the only cheaper rate at night is heating hot water heaters.
I know this problem. One of the things we have done is replace the old machines as they die with energy efficient ones.
Having a 1200 spin on the washing machine has saved loads of time on the dryer-and the dryer uses far more leccy, so I am hoping that will cut the bill a bit.
one way to save money if your doing dishes is to wash them by hand. assuming you have time. don't let the water run. if you have a double sink, one side with suds, one with rinse water. change water when it is not clean enough to rinse or wash.
now electricity, for washer, wash once a week. hang clothes to dry.
use cold water cycle only unless the clothes are deep down dirty, use warm water. also use laundry soap that is meant for cold water and tough stains.
keep all lights off during the day.
at night, only keep on lights you actually need. keep doors closed if your heating the house when its cold. don't open windows when the heat is on. keep heat at 70 degrees at night when you go to bed.
get yourself an energy savings monitor for your pc if you don't have a laptop. LCD ones are good.
when you do dishes, keep your water a little over luke warm. the hotter the water, the more it takes for your hot water tank to heat the water.
in summer, turn off your furnace if you can. if not, and your using an air conditioner, only turn it on for the hottest part of the day, and as soon as it cools off outside, turn the air conditioner off.
eat cold cuts and cold food during hot weather. saves the energy it takes to heat your stove up to cook. use a barbeque if you can during hot weather.
for baths, don't fill the tub full. fill it less than your normally do.
saves water, and saves heating bills.
shower if you can. don't take extended showers. keep it to five minutes. buy yourself a water saving shower head. as well, if you can afford it, get yourself one of those water saving toilets.
recycle everything you can. the more you recycle, the better it is for the earth. less land fills mean a cleaner environment.
don't use pesticides in your garden. look for alternative environmentally friendly ways to keep bugs out of your garden. if your watering trees or shrubs or flowers, only do it once a week, and don't do it for long. do it in the early morning or after sunset.
mowing lawns, once a week is sufficient. don't mow it down to the soil level. leave about 3 inches on top of the soil. use a hand mower, no gas, no electricity needed. takes extra effort, but we all need a bit of excercise anyhow.
these are pretty much the best tips i can give anyone on how to save money.
Wow. Lots of tips here Marilena. Thanks.
like i said, i have alot of tips.
Unplug electronic things that are charging once they are fully charged (cell phones, laptops, etc.). I didn't know that they used power after being charged but apparently they do.
